Track Your Cashback Shopping
By Bronwen Pollard

My last article (Cashback Websites) was praising the uses of cashback websites to do your shopping and everyday mundane things like buying house insurance or applying for credit cards. Hopefully it helped answer any questions that you may have had on cashback websites and getting rid of any cynical thoughts you might have had about them.

One thing I didn't touch on was the technical part of how the website knows that you have bought anything through their site in order for you to be rewarded cashback.

The cashback websites have relationships with the retailers that allow them to promote their shops through the website in return for commission. When these relations are made, the retailer issues the cashback website with a unique URL tracking code which identifies the source of the traffic (where the customer has come from to buy something). In addition to this each member from the cashback website is also given a unique URL tracing code for their purchase to be traced back to that member for the commission / cashback to be rewarded to the right member.

Customers of cashback websites sometime get despondent when they buy an item through the site and then find that either the money doesn't show in their account for maybe a few weeks.

This is because of two reasons. Firstly the retailer that you have purchased an item through can sometimes take a while to accept the transaction as being processed / complete either because the payment is taking a while to process or the card use to pay has had some problems (in some cases the card may have been flagged as fraudulent).

Secondly, the retailer might delay the payment until the 28 days statutory returns policy has expired so that they are happy that you are not going to take the cashback and then return the item leaving them short of pocket!

A few ways to increase tracking time is:

Clear out your cookies: The cookies track all your purchases and the websites that you have visited, so if have looked at a website in the past, without going through a cashback site, then when you do purchase something though them, it will not track it (so beware!)

Check other forms of stopping tracking: Your computer may be designed to block adverts or prevent tracking cookies so check that it is not preventing you from being tracked. The site I use has some simple guide lines to check your cookie set up to ensure you will get 100% of your cashback: http://www.poundpig.com/checkcookies.php

Go through your cashback site: Even though most cookies track what you buy once you have been through a cashback site even if you are not on the website, make sure you always go through the site no matter what you are thinking of buying.

If all else fails, contact your cashback website and tell them your problems and if they are a good site, then the customer service should be really be spot on and they sort out your problems
